中華人民共和国広東省江門市にある「開平楼閣と村落」を題材とした、世界遺産シリーズの１枚で、先月発売されたばかりです。
毎年、中国国内の世界遺産が一箇所だけ選ばれて発行されています（2012年から発売開始）

開平楼閣と村落とは

開平楼閣は広東省江門市の開平市にある独特な形状をした楼閣群で、過去には3000基以上ありましたが、現存しているのは1833基です。
2007年にUNESCO（ユネスコ）の世界遺産に登録されました。

この楼閣が建築されるようになったのは、おおよそ1900年頃からです。
高層の楼閣は遠方を監視するだけでなく、それ自体に防衛機能を有しており、水害や盗賊による被害から身を守ることが目的とされました。
中は居住スペースがあるため、現在もそこで生活している方々がいます。

これだけの建築物を多数建造するのは当然のことながら、相当なお金がかかります。
その建設費を賄ったのは、北アメリカに出稼ぎに出ていた中国人移民たちでした。
ゴールドラッシュや大陸横断鉄道の労働力として現地で汗を流した彼らは、その後アメリカとカナダの政策により、国に帰ることを強要されます。
当時この辺り一帯の治安状況は悪かったため、帰国した彼らの持ち帰った財産で楼閣が幾つも建築されることとなりました。

Kaiping Diaolou and Villages (UNESCO/NHK)

香港から日帰りで観光というのは少し難しそうですが、日程に余裕があれば一度足を運んでみたいところです。

Since 2012, Hongkong Post has been issuing stamp sheetlets in its World Heritage in China Series to showcase the natural and cultural heritage sites in our country that have been inscribed on the World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Since becoming a State Party to the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1985, China has had 50 world heritage sites recognised, and ranks as one of the countries with the largest number of such heritage sites.

The present stamp sheetlet, World Heritage in China Series No. 6, features the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages. This heritage site, located in Kaiping, Guangdong Province, was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2007. The Diaolou is a fortified residence in the form of a multi-storey tower integrating Chinese and Western architectural styles. The sheer height of the tower provides its dwellers with an excellent vantage point for defence. The origin of the Diaolou dates back to the Ming Dynasty, when Kaiping residents built defensive towers boasting thick, reinforced walls in their villages to protect themselves against rampant bandit raids, a society without law and order, and frequent floods. In the early twentieth century, numerous Chinese emigrants returned to China and built new houses in their hometowns, ushering in the heyday of Kaiping Diaolou towers with a peak count of more than 3 000 in total. Today, there are still 1 833 surviving examples of the Diaolou in 15 towns across Kaiping. The Diaolou towers blend graciously with the natural landscape and traditional village dwellings of the Kaiping countryside to form a truly unique picture.

The stamp sheetlet depicts the cluster of Diaolou towers on the farmlands of Zili Village in the town of Tangkou in Kaiping. Members of the cluster include Yangxian Villa, Yunhuan Lou, Ju’an Lou and Anlu. Diaolou towers in other villages in Kaiping are also integrated into the design with the aid of computer graphics. These Diaolou towers dot the tranquil and rustic countryside in an intriguing way, harmonising with one another in terms of overall layout. The stamp itself shows the modestly-designed Yunhuan Lou, a five-storey Diaolou tower complete with its own walled courtyard. The right side of the stamp sheetlet shows a close-up of a Diaolou tower rooftop, which gives the illusion that one is actually admiring the breathtaking scenery of the Kaiping Villages from the rooftop.
